Tales of the beautiful and great Maria Makiling is known among every single child in the Philippines. She came to life due to the formation of Mt. Makiling in Laguna, where one could see that it resembles a woman. Like most folklore in the Philippines, one must respect nature and nature will respect you. If not, you could end up lost and covered in insect bites. Our friend Ianna has taken the statue of her from the University of the Philippines as inspiration for her artwork. See more of her art here.
Our friend Antonia Baytion has submitted some artworks for this month's theme Into the Wild, by beautifully painting illustrations of faeries. Check out more of her stuff at her Tumblr.
"To encapsulate what the four illustrations are, it's how we 'grow up' and, when we do, we lose touch with the fairy tale whimsy that we used to believe in. So we start looking for the fantasy world that we lost and, as much as we try, we go to our own extremes to reach Neverland. So we try to grow our own wings and think that when we do, we get our freedom from the adversities of our reality."
