Mind blowing, right?
Even though I am not an expert on shooting film and I am still learning myself, I know three good reasons why you should give it a try:
1. It’s cheap.
Though some film cameras are ridiculously too expensive, generally, they cost not more than $45. The price gets even lower if you buy them at thrift stores and online. eBay and Amazon have tons of cameras you can buy or bid on; you can even get free camera accessories and straps if you get super lucky. Disposables are even cheaper; they range at $10 to $25 and can be found almost anywhere (even in Disneyland). $10 for 36 photos? Now that sounds tempting.
2. It looks cool.
Come on, it is pretty cool to walk around with a film camera hanging around your neck. It’s so hipster! I once took a photo of a swimming pool using my Canon AE-1 Program and posted it on Tumblr. It got over 20,000 notes! I’m not gonna lie, I felt awesome. The thing is, teenagers like looking at film photos. They brand film as “soft grunge” or “vintage” since film cameras were at the top of its game before the kids who are using it now were even born. I’m not saying that you should totally jump into the bandwagon of hipster teens who are raving about disposables; I’m saying that it’s different and it’s refreshing. These days, almost everyone owns a DSLR or digital camera; I guess it’s just good to remind people where it all started.
3. It’s a ‘worth it’ challenge.
Who doesn’t love a good challenge? Shooting in film will make you think more. It’ll make you want to really be able to get perfect shots since you can’t undo (or even redo) them, and you will never know how your photos will look like until they get developed. Think about this: You can’t delete a photo. You know what that means? Every photo, every moment, every mistake you capture is forever yours.
There are so many more reasons and I don’t think the list will ever end. I hope I gave you guys a new perspective of it and I really do hope some of you are now motivated to shoot film. If you’re still in doubt, remember that it’s a Cheap Cool Challenge!
