Lily Allen has always been known for her snarky, or even sarcastic, songwriting -- though her songs sound fun and catchy, there's a serious message behind her lyrics (listen to “Smile” and “Fuck You” if you want to know what I’m talking about). This new single is no different; essentially, it’s a feminist anthem. The song includes lyrics like: “If I told you ‘bout my sex life, you’d call me a slut / When boys be talking ‘bout their bitches, no one’s making a fuss,” which obviously slams the slut-shaming ideology. Listen to the song and you’ll really hear her resentment towards the misogyny present in today’s culture.
The music video bashes sexism even further. The first part where she is seen getting a liposuction is clearly a shot at how society expects women to have a certain body so that they would be deemed attractive. Throughout the video, her “manager” is seen directing her and telling her what to do, which is most likely a representation of the patriarchy as a whole. Most of the scenes afterward depict her dancing with scantily clad women, dancing and twerking seductively - showing how most music videos these days simply show half-(or even completely)-naked women just so people would watch it. One scene in particular pokes fun at a scene from popular example of those provocative videos, Robin Thicke’s “Blurred Lines,” where a naked model dances in front of the words “Robin Thicke has a big dick” which are spelled out with shiny silver balloons. Allen does the same, except with the words “Lily Allen has a baggy pussy.”
