I Love BBC

Dear BBC Radio 1,

I doubt that you will ever see this but it’s okay, I’m still going to tell you how much I love you. First of all, I am not an avid fan of pop music. Particularly, the songs that play on the radio every waking moment. So I appreciate the Live Lounge taking great artists and bands and [probably] forcing them to make covers of those pop songs. Second, 2013 was a very eventful year and you made it even more awesome with all the amazing covers you uploaded on YouTube the past year. If I could compare thee to a summer’s day...I wouldn’t; because you guys are cool. Get it? No? Okay. On a more serious note, I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for producing the best YouTube covers of 2013.

Here are my favorites in no particular order:

1. Bastille's "We Can't Stop"
When I first heard the original version, I couldn’t get it out of my head. Even though I am not a fan of Miley Cyrus, this song became my summer jam. Bastille became my summer jam too. You took my two summer jams and mashed it into one. Thank you, I appreciate the gesture. I should probably thank Bastille too, so please tell them that I am grateful for their efforts as well. Please also tell them that I love the “Achy Breaky Heart” part in there.

2. Arctic Monkey's "Hold On, We're Going Home"
This cover was very sexy, I have to say. You let Alex Turner wear a tucked in and slightly unbuttoned shirt with a pair of RayBans on. Even if they were indoors, you still let him wear those sunglasses. Who knew that you guys were pretty badass as well? Not me.

3. Rudimental's "Monster/Story Of My Life"
Holy shit you guys, this mashup was too good. The dancing was so infectious and the goddamn song was amazing. It was kind of like a mix of pop and reggae; it was too much to handle. Everything was perfect. Anne-Marie and Will Heard were perfect. You guys are perfect (well maybe not, but you’re close).

4. Tom Odell's "Roar"
First, I would like to say that Tom Odell reminds me of Caspar Lee but with a sexier and raspier voice. That statement alone says a lot. Second, this version killed the original one and buried it underground. That says a lot too because I actually kind of like Katy Perry’s music. Tom Odell made the song a hundred times better in my opinion and I’m sad that the video has only a few hundred thousand views. Please make it go viral.

5. London Grammar's "Wrecking Ball"
This was so haunting and so beautiful in so many ways. They made a “ballad” more like a ballad. I didn’t even think that was possible. If I didn’t know this was originally by Miley Cyrus, I would’ve thought that this was their song. Yeah, that’s how good it is. Haim’s version was good too, but man did London Grammar take this song to a whole new level.

6. Tom Odell's "I Knew You Were Trouble"
Okay seriously, fuck you guys for being awesome and fuck Tom for being a genius. I’m so done.

So to wrap this “letter” up, I would like to congratulate you, BBC Radio 1, for letting all these amazing artists have creative control over these songs. You made the world a better place to live in. Please make 2014 a wonderful year as well.

Sincerely Yours,
Reign Gonzales
