Named after the classic Suede song, Drowners was formed by Welsh-born model/frontman Matthew Hitt. Along with Jack Ridley III, Eric Snyder, and Lakis Pavlou, the band has certainly made a name for themselves in the indie rock music scene. From performing at local bars in NYC to opening for bands such as The Vaccines and Foals, they have surely come a long way since they got together in 2011. The band has gained much attention (probably mostly from teenage girls) seeing as they aesthetically resemble a cool British rock band from the late 70‘s. Drowners will also make you fall in love with their music as they are what I call: the perfect combination of The Smiths and The Strokes.
With the release of their self-titled debut album, the band has proven to be one of the best breakthrough bands of the year. The album includes songs from the Between Us Girls EP and new songs that talk about love, heartache, and girls. It may seem that those themes have been overused and are overdone, but Drowners have taken those cheesy topics and turned them into songs that will make you want to travel back in time to the glory days of indie/post-punk music. Songs such as Luv, Hold Me Down and Pure Pleasure will capture you with their melodious tunes and poetic lyrics.
The band is currently en route to Europe for they are set to play shows in France, Germany, and the UK. Aside from international shows, they will also tour some states in the US and will be playing at Coachella and SXSW this year as well as the Governor’s Ball.
Fangirl feelings aside, I would give the album and the band a perfect 10 out of 10 for providing us with fun songs and good times. It is no doubt that this band will soon take over the charts and the hearts of a million other teenage girls, and I’m excited for what they have in store for us as the year progresses. Hopefully, they’ll bring us more music some time soon.
But for now, let’s all enjoy their new album and their pretty faces.
