Let’s not forget that Sam Smith also did the same immature act as Taylor Swift did. So, if you treated Taylor with criticism then, stop making excuses for Sam Smith now.

If you guys don’t know yet, very recently, Sam Smith just won four GRAMMYs. Two awards for his hit single, Stay With Me, as Record of the Year and Song of the Year; one award for his debut album, In the Lonely Hour, as Best Pop Vocal Album; and one award for himself as Best New Artist. After he received his finally award, for Album Record of the Year, he said in his acceptance speech, "I want to thank the man who this record is about, who I fell in love with last year. Thank you so much for breaking my heart because you got me four Grammys.” Promptly after that, people on the Internet applauded him and laughed at what he said in his speech. But after that, seeing as how people reacted on social media, people started to question why the reception for Smith’s speech was positive, while Taylor Swift’s acceptance speech back in 2013 at the VMAs received backlash from everyone. There is no denying the double standard that these two situations clearly illustrate. Taylor Swift practically said the same thing as Sam Smith, but why is it that when it comes to her, she “took it too far”. Yeah, okay, maybe it was immature of her to say that, especially since Harry Styles was there, but you don’t go seeing anyone dissing Sam Smith about doing the same thing. I don’t think people still understand the meaning of having gender equality, especially in the media. I think, as long as you’re a woman in the media industry, people will always look for something to criticize. I feel like male artists are watched less by the media than female artists. Even if it is 2015, there is no denying that there is still the double standard in society, and I think media is the one most at fault for that. They sensationalize things that isn’t supposed to be sensationalized, and make a big deal out of things that should be seen as normal. They are the ones responsible for reshaping and contouring the public’s perceptions and beliefs.
