While they may have made a name for themselves based on their music videos, even forming a fan base that can be seen as respectable and even impressive for an alternative band, society has never truly seen the music behind all of Ok Go!’s shenanigans in front of the camera. It’s quite saddening to think that most people will never look beyond the video presentations that these musically talented, perhaps even genius artists put out to the populace.
Ok Go! is a unique band, even beyond their music videos. Their quirky, energetic sound is something that ignites the soul through music alone. The basis of this is their lead vocalist, and band leader Damian Kulash, who also directs their music videos. Kulash is a man of structure and complexity, his vocal progression and lyrics may seem very simple and understandable at first glance, but Kulash always makes sure to provide some level of sophistication and intricacy in his songs. He is the band’s leader, the soul of the band. He gives the band all their quirkiness and ear-catching tunes just by opening his mouth and letting his vocal chords run crazy.
Unlike most mainstream bands like Vampire Weekend and Arctic Monkeys, Ok Go! makes sure that all of their members are equally recognized for their brilliance. While Kulash is as charismatic a front man as they come, drummer Dan Konopka, bassist Tim Nordwind and leading guitarist Andy Ross are all stars in their own right. It’s quite rare for a band to be able to control the stage equally, each facet of the band being given attention and praise. Whether it be their crazy dance moves, or their frequent solos, each member of Ok Go will be able to leave u breathless with their pure energy and enthusiasm for their craft. It’s quite saddening that all these traits
You might question why they even continue making music videos, even if they overshadow all of their music and talent. Perhaps simpler music videos would put more attention to the music they make, rather to their antics. These maybe true, but the band still acknowledges how important their music videos are to their image and popularity, and as part of their image, these music videos are not going to be discontinued anytime soon.
These are the mechanisms that brought Ok Go! to the mainstream. It might seem a little strange to have formed a reputation based of video accompaniments of their art, but Ok Go! has turned the music video into a whole new art form in itself. Perhaps these music videos aren’t hindrances to their musical recognition, but are a part of their image as a band and as artists. They are so much more than the band with the crazy music videos, but perhaps these music videos are a symbol for them as people. Extravagant, outrageous, unique and most of all, genius.
