I mean have you seen Beetlejuice? It's definitely something you should watch for Halloween, especially if you don't feel like pissing your pants in the process. The premise is that a ghost couple gets "haunted by the living" when a new family moves into their home. They call on the great Betelgeuse to work his magic. Beetlejuice is a perfect example on Burton's creativity with his props and graphics. Only a million dollars was allocated for special effects and Burton had the idea of making them "look cheap and purposely fake-looking" to echo the B movie style he grew up with. Stop motion animation (I'm guessing his favorite special effects), puppetry, and prosthetic make-up were some of the effects he used and yes, they did indeed look cheap looking. But hey, it worked pretty well.
I have to say the first time I have ever watched a Tim Burton movie was when The Corpse Bride was showing in cinemas. I remember begging my friends back then that I didn't want to watch because I am an absolute wuss with horror films. The idea of a dead bride being accidentally resurrected by some poor guy made my seven year-old self go into tears out of fear. But it was that same movie that had driven away my fears with Tim Burton movies. At first, a Burton film will look creepy but once you go through the first ten or so minutes, comedy is introduced. Burton knows how to make the perfect cocktail of horror and humor.
