It was hard to focus on the stories
I understand that with a huge star-studded cast, it’s quite difficult to equally give everyone enough screen time, but it felt like the movie was too rushed; everything happened too abruptly and I guess this is the result of having too many stars in one rom-com. The transition of each sub-story to another were too fast and it’s as if you only get to go back to a sub-story once every other character is shown on screen. I particularly wanted the story of Stan (Robert De Niro) to be focused on more. Sure, the scene where he saw the ball drop for the last time was a good scene but I wished they expounded on his character. Also, I don’t know why you had to put too many big celebrities in one movie. Like, will it actually make the movie better?
Some of the stories were “what the fuck?”
I can’t seem to understand why a teenage girl would forgive a boy whom she saw kissing another girl on New Year’s Eve when he specifically said that he would kiss her? And why would her mother allow her to go to a party with that boy (who obviously shouldn’t be trusted) even though it was past midnight? Then that mother goes on to meet the guy she claims to love but she only met him once and that was a year ago. I don’t get it. I also found the story of the two couples fighting and getting too competitive for their unborn child to be the first born of the year quite ridiculous. However, I did like that the winning couple gave the prize to the other couple because they had more children to provide for. I just wish the stories had more content, even if it is a romantic comedy film.
Overall, I would give this movie a 4/10. I can’t deny that it was entertaining but it could’ve been so much better if each sub-story had better plots. After all, you had a huge cast to work with, you should’ve done more with them.
What do you think?
