It first started 40 years ago. Back in 1975, Antonio Villegas, the mayor of Manila back then, initiated a festival wherein Filipino movies were honored and celebrated. It was first called the Metropolitan Film Festival. Only Filipino produced films were allowed to be shown in theaters all throughout the 12-day festival. There were 8 official entries and "Diligin Mo ng Hamog ang Uhaw na Lupa", starring former president Joseph Estrada, snagged literally half of the awards during the awards night including the Best Film and Best Actor awards.
