LEARNING FROM YEEZUS

How do we even begin discussing about one of the most famous and powerful celebrities in the whole world again? There’s just too much to talk about.

From our past issues, we’ve tackled a little bit about Kanye West from his music to his personality; and everything discussed could basically be summed up in one sentence: Kanye West is one of a kind. Not just because of his music or fame, but also because of how he generally is. He’s got quite a big ego as a lot of us may already know. I mean, he obviously shows quite a lot of narcissism and pride more than other celebrities. So sure, his personality comes off as very obnoxious at most times, but we can’t really deny that some of his traits are quite admirable. And surprisingly, we might learn a thing or two from the almighty yeezus himself.

So instead of going on and on about his music or criticizing his attitude, let’s list down a couple of things we can learn from Kanye West:

#1: DREAM BIG

Picture
Just like Kanye, be as ambitious as you want and work hard to achieve your goals. There’s nothing wrong with wanting a little more for yourself, so just have confidence and believe that you can achieve greater things in life.

#2: Don’t be afraid to stand up
for what you believe in

Picture
Know what you stand for, even if you’re the only person who’s willing to fight for it. You have a voice so don’t be afraid to let everybody hear it. Remember the VMAs with Taylor Swift? Although it was a low blow for Kanye to rudely get up on stage during the acceptance speech, he felt like he had to say something so he did. He wasn’t ashamed about his opinion. Maybe his measures were a little to drastic but you get the idea. (His 2015 VMAs speech was pretty incredible too.)

#3: EMBRACE SOME OF THE CRITICISM

Picture
There will always be people out there who will try to bring you down and what they might say could really affect your self-esteem, but it’s up to you how you will handle their judgements. Not everyone will agree with what you do, but that doesn’t mean you’re in the wrong. As Kanye said, “Criticism can bother you, but you should be more bothered if there’s no criticism. That means you’re too safe”.

#4 Be eager to try new things.

Picture
Seize the day. Carpe that fucking diem. Take risks. Don’t let opportunities pass just because you're afraid of the outcome. As the song Champion goes, "When it feel like living's harder than dying,
for me giving up's way harder than trying".

#5: LOVE YOURSELF

Picture
Do I need to explain more? Love yourself like Kanye loves himself.

The Curious Case of Essena O'Neill

Essena O'Neill made headlines this week with her resounding message to the online world. According to her, social media is not real. In fact, it can bring out the worst in us as we try to put out the best. O'Neill was one of the many Instagram celebrities whose feeds comprise of modelling and beauty pictures that claim to be candid and effortless. She deleted all of 2000 posts and reposted those pictures with edited captions that explained the actual story behind the process. One caption tells how she would yell at her sister for 30 minutes to take her photo properly. Another emphasizes how O'Neill was paid by sponsors to starve herself to look perfect for one picture. Now, she calls the Internet to create a social media platform that does not validate someone by likes, followers, views, shares, etc.

As far as I have seen, people are torn to label O'Neill as a hero or someone who was just extremely insecure and needy.

As someone who is of the same age as O'Neill, I understand where she is coming from. We have this impending anxiety to be reassured that what we are wearing, what we are saying, and what we are doing is right. I have to admit that even I feel let down when my original posts on the Internet do not get as much likes or shares as I anticipated. Recognition is an amazing feeling, however in social media context, that feeling is heightened to new levels. I was asking around for opinions regarding this and one of my friends said that we have to take into consideration the vast amount of people on the internet and how it's so hard to be original. The more people present, the less likely you are to stand out. Adding to the toxicity is the fact that O'Neill mixes the need for validation and consumerism through her sponsorships. It seems that she has been getting by through her sponsorships alone since she has called for donations after she had "quit" social media. I can only imagine how much stress a person can go through knowing that her state of living is dependent on the validation of others.

Her issue isn't new at all. Actually, I wonder why it comes to a surprise to the public that people are paid through social media. It is a smart move for companies to move into social media for their marketing grounds since practically the whole world is on it. I don't believe that it's a bad thing that a person would pose for one brand if it helps them keep a roof over their heads. What I find wrong about O'Neill's case is that she's calling for a revolution of social media without thinking outside of her perspective. Not all Instagram celebrities put as much effort as she does in her photos. Not all internet celebrities feel as pressured as she is to be validated by their public. No one forced her to do anything of those things. The standards that she had to conform to are institutional. It's not really social media that's making her suck in her stomach and pose in a bikini, while still being a minor, but rather society's long standing traditions of beauty that are strive in advertising. There are also criticisms regarding how she hasn't really quit social media. She still runs a blog and a Vimeo promoting her cause. Plus, she's still using Instagram by editing the captions of her pictures. I guess the biggest difference her is that she's being transparent about things now.

I'm not saying I'm totally against O'Neill. She raises good points about the sexualization and exploitation of a young woman's body. She is completely right on how we should be ourselves on social media. But she fails to define what draws the line in being genuine with situations that are unlike hers. She generalizes too much. Social media is the revolutionary invention in communication technology. You cannot apply morality on social media and call it evil. It's the existing unjust social norms that follow social media that is the problem. The power of social media is dependent on the susceptibility of every individual.
