There are some things in this world that are just way too difficult to comprehend. Some are just simply weird, while others reach level 9999 weird. However strange these things may seem to a larger crowd, there’s always going to be a minority who will take in these weird wacky stuff and somehow infuse it with the norms.
A few weeks ago I came across this documentary by Kate Shenton entitled, On Tender Hooks. Honestly I thought it was going to be about animal cruelty or whatever because really, hooks. So obviously since these kinds of things interest me, I checked out its summary. Two words: Human suspension. No they don’t suspended from school or something.
They literally get suspended with hooks.
So now we move on to the actual film. Hey, it’s okay. I’m not going to make it too graphic.
The film opens with the director interviewing the man who owns the company who does the human suspensions, in which he tells the story of how his odd business started. Now if you think they’re doing this in a sketchy underground tunnel or whatever, no they are not. They keep their equipment sanitized and they actually have this small studio where they do most of the suspensions. Their equipment? Oh you know, just large hooks that are about the size of a grown man’s palm and are actually used to cast large fish. No big deal.
And then, the actual process of human suspensions is shown. Like with blood and everything. It’s not that bloody, really, but if you easily get weak at the sight of blood and unusual things piercing the body, then you might have already covered your eyes at this point of the film. I don’t blame you though. It really isn’t pretty seeing people have large meat hooks inserted in certain parts of their body. And then watch them get elevated about 3 or 4 inches above the ground. And then see them just spin around like a human pendulum. But you won’t see from their faces that they’re feeling any pain. Well, of course they are, but it’s the adrenaline kicking in that’s making them smile while they’re “hanging around” (too soon?)
WARNING: I ATTACHED A PHOTO JUST TO GIVE YOU GUYS AN IDEA OF HOW THEY DO THE SUSPENSION. IF YOU DON’T WANT TO SEE IT THERE’S NOTHING YOU CAN DO IT’S LITERALLY JUST BELOW THIS THING. BUT YOU CAN SCROLL REAL QUICK.
