Now, here's why you should love Lupita Nyong'o:
- She just won more than 10 awards for her film 12 Years a Slave. She plays the African American slave Patsey, who works in a cotton farm and is subjected to much physical and emotional abuse.
- Amazing fashion sense. She has been featured in Harper's Bazaar's Derek Blasberg's Best Dressed List since Autumn 2013.
- Just plain beautiful. She has been on countless magazine covers such as DuJour Magazine, Vanity Fair, Vogue, and et cetera.
- She accept black beauty. Did I say accept? I meant, promotes, and I quote her speech for winning Essence's Black Woman in Hollywood Award, "I remember a time when I too felt unbeautiful. I put on the TV and only saw pale skin, I got teased and taunted about my night-shaded skin," Nyong'o said. "And my one prayer to God, the miracle worker, was that I would wake up lighter-skinned," she said. "I tried to negotiate with God, I told him I would stop stealing sugar cubes at night if he gave me what I wanted, I would listen to my mother’s every word and never lose my school sweater again if he just made me a little lighter. But I guess God was unimpressed with my bargaining chips because He never listened."
