Ana Maria was not the average girl in their family. At the most, she was below-average. She was only sixteen years old and she was already experiencing her quarter-life crisis. Her mother’s family were musicians and her father’s were academe teachers. She has a secret that only her parents and sisters only knew. She was failure in life and her parents were sad that she couldn’t play any instruments or pass to their alma maters. She owned nothing, did nothing, and sometimes, she felt nothing for things she’s supposed to feel something about! Ana Maria’s secret wish was to save the world. Even under all the spectacle, she can do something spectacular. It’s not as spectacular as saving people or saving the world but it’s a secret she’s still going to keep.
When she finally ended up on their street, she saw the line of cars parked outside their house. Guests, she thought. As she got closer she realized that they weren’t just any guests. They were her relatives. Her titas, titos, cousins and grandparents that will probably question her about her doings in life. She couldn’t make a scene, of course. Her parents had to maintain the perfect life they seemed to be living.
Ana Maria woke up to the sound of asteroids hitting their neighbor’s house. A scream broke out and she had identified it as her sister’s. She immediately stood up and ran to her sister’s bedroom.
“Ana Maria, we’re leaving this house!” Her mother yelled when she saw her.
“If you haven’t noticed, we’re going to be dead in a few minutes!” Her mother replied.
“Why wasn’t this on the news last night?” She asked.
“I DON’T KNOW!” Her mother shouted again.
After five minutes, the whole family scrambled out of the house and went to the car.
“Should we be riding a car?” Her sister asked.
“I don’t know but our government hasn’t given us specifics on how to avoid asteroids.” Their father responded.
Their street was a mess! There were debris everywhere and people shouting all around. Ana Maria could even see the manang who swept the streets that always gave her a stink eye running for her life.
“BAD NEWS!” Her other sister screamed.
They all looked at the burning sky and saw a huge asteroid coming to destroy their whole lives. At once, Ana Maria knew that she had to do something now. Something that would fulfill her wishes and save their necks.
She jumped out of the car and stared at the asteroid.
“What are you doing, you crazy girl!” Her mother shouted.
Yet her mother was going to be left speechless along with her sisters. Ana Maria was single-handedly holding off the asteroid with her mind.
“Telekinesis.” His father gasped.
It was like a movie where Ana Maria saved the day and everyone was going to believe in her. She’s saving the world!
Another gritty day in the life and another unreachable sci-fi dream. Ana Maria knew she had to face the reality sooner or later. She had to go to college, she had to ask help from her family and she had to keep up the perfect facade that her parents want to keep. Even if she didn’t want to, she had to. Her parents wanted to believe that their life was perfect and Ana Maria was the undoing of their imaginations. If she couldn’t have her dream of saving the world, she would at least let her parents achieve their dream even if it will cost her life. She had to live in the world she’s living in and she had to let go of the imaginations.
