Spring Cleaning

Spring/summer is here and you're probably preparing for your beach bod (if you're like most of us who needs to prepare [cue bitter tears]). One way of doing that is by cleansing and detoxifying your body. Detoxification is basically drinking lots and lots of juice that come from vegetables and fruits that will cleanse your body by flushing out all the toxins in your system all the while absorbing essential vitamins and nutrients. Since these said toxins are mostly stored in your fat cells, it means that you can lose weight while "juicing" too. Experts even say that it can also cleanse the mind and soul.

Why do the juice cleanse?

Contrary to popular belief, not everyone participates in juice cleansing to lose weight, some do it for health-related problems such as digestive problems, sinusitis, high blood pressure, et cetera. The main organs that the juice cleanse target are the liver, kidney, colon, skin, and the lungs. It gives the body lots of energy because of all the vitamins absorbed in your system. This, in turn, makes having glowing skin an side effect of juicing. Also, it can make you lose weight since the toxins that these juices are trying to get rid of are stored in your fat cells. And since juicing works fast because of its high water content, you lose those pound pretty fast too.

Why NOT to do the juice cleanse

Remember, nothing is perfect. One con is that you can lose muscle mass even if you continue to work out. This is because you only get half the calories you need, so your body has no choice but to get energy from either triglycerides (which are stored in fats) and protein. Another con you might consider is that you only get sugar and vitamins from these drinks -- no fiber, no protein, no healthy fats. And yes, it can be a fast weight loss remedy; but, there's also a high possibility that you'll gain that weight as fast as you lost them. Some side-effects might also include nausea, dehydration and/or fatigue.

Things to remember when doing a juice cleanse:

1. Do not overdo it

Based on the things you've read above, you're probably a bit if-y now that you know the pros and cons. Although it's still safe to do it, hinay-hinay lang! You don't have to do it every month if you don't want to, and it could just be a weekend thing. This will probably involve a lot of trips to the bathroom, so do this occasionally (or rarely). You can do it every three months or once a year. Experts recommend to do it when you're likely not going to be tempted by the amount of food on the table a.k.a. during Christmas.

2. Working out is not recommended

Because you don't get the other nutrients that you need for when you exercise, you'll easily feel tired when you start working out. urbanremedy.com suggests you to limit yourself to walking, yoga, and stretching, if you really want to exercise. According to celebrity trainer, Harley Pasternak, while doing this, you're basically starving yourself. With this being said, do you think you really need anymore exercise to be bikini ready?

3. Know what you're getting into
Since the juice cleanse has become a kind of trend, there are now a lot of organic stores and restaurant which sell detoxifying food and juices both locally and internationally. Some of which have their own stalls where you can buy directly from, and others can be delivered to you by ordering from their websites. You can actually consult these shops about how to go about the diet. Some local shops that I know sell a bottle for not less than PhP 100. But if you think they're a bit pricey, you can go on and make them your own.

With thorough research, you can spend less and customize your cleanse. Here are some websites that can aid you in really knowing what this regimen is:

Juice cleansing can be a great way to give your body a retreat from all the toxins of everyday food. It's a fresh start and a getaway for your body. There are a few risks, but there is also a good reward. If you are really determined about this, remember to have discipline and not to overwork yourself.
