Making a big impact in local foodie news now is Hole in the Wall, the first of its kind high-class food court to hit the Metro. Located in Century City Mall, Makati, its set-up of is like a warehouse turned living room with its amazing blend of industrial and cozy, playing with woods, metals, bricks, finishing off with gray walls, warm light in industrial lamps, greenery and color from the furnishing. The place has a broad line up of food ranging from Asian fried chicken to artisanal cookies and milk. Some of the most noted stalls in this classy food court are Bad Bird, Mister Delicious, and Scout’s Honor.
If you’re a big fan of spicy food or if you just feel like you wanna cry a little but you can’t bring the tears out then Bad Bird is for you. Bad Bird is known for its Asian spiced fried chicken ranging from safe to chemical. They also severe sides to go with your chicken such as kimchi coleslaw, sweet potato waffles, and dirty rice, which is fried rice with bacon and chicken liver. I recommend getting sides that aren’t spicy like the sweet potato waffles with miso butter maple syrup to even out the flavor of the chicken. It costs Php 330 for the Corn and Coleslaw plate, Php 320 for the Dirty Rice plate, and Php 290 for the Waffle Plate, all of which has two pieces of succulent chicken with the sides.
Leveling up the ordinary sandwiches and making it even more heavenly is Mister Delicious. This stall makes sandwiches feel like fine dining considering its menu of their own Mister Delicious BLT (Php 370), Smoked Pulled Pork Sandwich (Php 390), Pastrami Reuben (Php 450), Curry Chicken Sandwich (Php 290), a killer Gooey Grilled Cheese (Php 350) and more. All of their sandwiches are huge and would be enough to feed two people or one very hungry or greedy person. The sandwiches are also pared with kamote chips which is perfect as it doesn’t over power the flavor of the sandwich compared to regular potato chips. The stall also provides breakfast options throughout the whole day such as Bacon Pancakes (Php 390), Biscuits and Gravy (Php 340), and Steak and Eggs (Php 390). Not only do they have amazing sandwiches be they also have beer to match with their craft beers and craft ginger ales.
Fulfilling our little girl scout dreams is Scout’s Honor. The place gives you the option to make your own cookie for just Php 120. It’s basically making your dream cookie without baking it yourself. You just choose the type of dough, classic, vegan, or molasses and oats, and then choose the toppings to go with it such as chocolates, marshmallows, dried fruit, and so on, then just leave it to the stall to bake it for you. If making your own cookie is not your thing you could choose one of their on the menu cookies such their Thin Mints, their Macha and Sesame, or their Cookie Inception, which is an Oreo inside a chocolate chip cookie.. But what are cookies without milk? Scout’s Honor also sells infused milk like their almond ginseng, bamboo charcoal, and cherry chocolate to compliment and complete your cookie cravings. The price of the cookies range from Php 180 to Php 250 for three pieces and the bottle of milk cost Php 110, but there are sets and packages to get a better deal.
Hole in the Wall should definitely be part of your barkada hang out list although you guys might want to save up if you all want to try a little bit of everything. Now let’s just all wish that our school cafeteria was as awesome as this place.

Everywhere we go, we always find an ad about a restaurant or a fast food chain releasing a new item on the menu. The food always looks appetizig and it makes us want to go to the nearest chain to get a bite of it. When we go to the chain, we are either pleased with the result or disappointed.
Most of the time we are disappointed.
On countless occasions, you will order a burger from Burger King or McDonald’s or Wendy’s and hope that the workers prepare it just like the picture. You will be given a tray with your drink, fries and burger and you will hop off to your table. Your stomach will be rumbling from the need to eat so you’ll tear off the wrapper to find a not so delicious meal in front of you.
Why are your meals like that?
Why are we given a meal that isn’t what is advertised?
In some instances, meals can look like the ad, that is if you go to a top notch restaurant and you splurge. Most of the time, we’ll head to the nearest fast food place and eat whatever is available because it’s cheap and fast. You probably don’t even take note of the look because it tastes so good. However, when you realize that the meal doesn’t look anything like the ad, you start to scrutinize the look of everything.
There has been plenty of mystery surrounding this topic about why food doesn’t look anything like the ad. One theory is that the meal in the ad has been made with other ingredients. For instance, a well-known fact about beer commercials is that they might add washing up liquid to the beer for it to foam up more.
With fast food, it has been bouncing back and forth. In some cases, the ads can be replicated in the chain if the workers put time and effort into the burger. With the increased amount of people going into fast food chains, there is a demand that needs to be met and so time is valuable to the business. You can see an experiment done on this by watching this video.
Another theory is that ads don’t actually contain proper food but substitutes that look like the food. Last year, consumerreports.org did an experiment on substituting the food for other things to make it look nicer. With fruit, they painted it with a mixture of water and a product called Quick Thick which allowed it to glisten while ice cream had a mixture of sugar, shortening, corn syrup and coloring (x).
It has also been found that the industry uses glue, toothpicks and may other things to keep the meal intact.
However, some companies have expressed the fact that they do use actual food but it has been manipulated. In some instances, the actual burger hasn’t been cooked fully as the burger would shrink if it were to be cooked all the way through. A lot of the time, companies have said that it is all to do with the lighting and angle of the shot so that it looks appetizing for the costumer.
As much as we would like our food to look amazing, it is damn near impossible without having to go back to the counter to complain. To be honest, so long as the food tastes okay, no one is really going to complain.

When you're literally stuck at home for a week because dad has a conference is Zurich, mom has a meeting in Korea, and the maid is on leave, your meal plan will be a worry if you have no idea how to work your way in the kitchen or when your pantry is totally empty. Sure, there's always food deliveries, but hey, that would cost you a lot and it could be unhealthy. (If you need a reminder as to how dangerous fast food is, do read this). So, before you're left all alone, be sure the kitchen is stocked up with food, then you could just get creative throughout the week. Or, you could ask her from mom/dad/the help if they could help you prepare a big serving of your favorite adobo or nilaga so you could just reheat it throughout the week. Then again, you'd get sick of those easily if you eat it every single day, so here are a couple of very simple recipes you could prepare for yourself to keep your tummy happy:
1. Grilled Cheese Sandwich
2. Maple Syrup French Toast
3. Mac and Cheese
4. Tuna Melt Sandwich
5. Omelette and Baked Eggs
6. Egg Sandwich
7. Butter and Cheese Pasta
Being home alone can get your creative juices running while you experiment in the kitchen. Just be careful when handling the gas stove and please don't accidentally chop off your fingers in the process.

We know what you’re thinking. No one has time to go to the store and buy all these healthy ingredients and make food, when the miraculous gift of fast food delivery has already been bestowed upon us mere mortals. And ewww, veggies? Let me tell you something, I’m not exactly the healthiest person. I LOATHE vegetables and I fill myself with junk food on a daily basis, and even though I don’t see the effects now, I understand that these can all show up in time. No one wants to struggle with health problems such as high cholesterol and blood pressure, insulin resistance, obesity, dental distress, and acne. Maybe now’s the time to change your eating habits. Check out these healthy, yet scrumptious alternatives to your favorite snacks.
CRAVING FOR A BURGER?
How about a delicious bagel with cream cheese and smoked salmon instead?
Opt for healthier sandwich choices. It’s a great way to get lots of different nutrients from all the ingredients in a single, easy to make snack. There’s so much you can do with healthy ingredients between two slices of bread. Go for bagels with cream cheese and smoked salmon. Salmon is rich in protein and omega-3, and bagels are a good source of fiber. If you’re watching out for your weight, use whole wheat bagels. Garnish with cucumber for some crunch.
CRAVING FOR CHIPS AND DIP?
A big bag of Lays potato chips and Fritos nacho cheese dip sounds very tempting, but crackers and cheesy spinach dip would do the trick without the extra calories.
Chips are just too full of trans fats, and we’re trying to stay away from that. These increase the risk of heart disease. The unbelievable amount of salt in each bag will contribute to hypertension, and eventually strokes or kidney failure. Not scaring you or anything. Crackers with this delicious dip alternative should satisfy your cravings. Spinach is rich in so many nutrients like calcium, protein, vitamins A & E - good for your bones, muscles, eyes, and skin! Plus the melted cheese gives it a delicious overall flavor. Out of crackers? Lick that dip bowl clean without the guilt.
CRAVING FOR SOME PIZZA?
Nothing wrong with pizza. It’s beautiful, glorious, flawless, it is the Beyoncé of food. Cheese? Good for you. Meat? Good for you. Bread? Makes you kinda chunky, but still good for you. It’s delivery/store-bought/frozen pizzas we’re talking about here. Lots of trans fats and grease. It’s better to make homemade pizza or alternatives of it. Try tomato and feta cheese on crisp bread or homemade pizza bagel bites.
Feta cheese and tomato go well together and create that cheesy, tomatoey taste we crave for in pizza. Bagel bites are fun to eat (because they’re so tricking adorable) and they’re good for you. Healthy, homemade tomato sauce is rich in lycopene, which battles cancer and gets rid of bad cholesterol. You can add herbs and spices to add a more refined flavour to these snacks. These delicious alternatives should have you thinking twice about having pizza delivered tonight.

CRAVING FOR FRENCH FRIES?
Fries will go straight to your thighs. Instead of consuming all those trans fats and empty calories, have twice baked potato with broccoli and cheese.
Broccoli is rich in Vitamin C, Vitamin B12, and phosphorus. In English, it’s good for your immune system, helps convert food into energy (better metabolism, one step closer to that beach body), and it’s good for your bones and teeth. The best part of this snack? CHEESY. POTATOES. You’d have to consume a lot of salty french fries to feel full. This baked potato snack that’s rich in nutrients is both filling and healthy.
CRAVING FOR FRIED CHICKEN?
Frying food increases the amount of fat and calories that you take in, and consequently, your chances of getting health problems. Forget about KFC for a moment, because grilled chicken salad with Dijon mustard is a better choice.
Grilling meat reduces fat content, and thus, less bad cholesterol in your blood. This helps fight against a lot of illnesses. The flavours in this recipe will make you forget you’re eating greens.
CRAVING FOR DESSERT?
Ice cream, chocolate cake, and cookies are delicious, but too much sugar is obviously bad for you. Giving in to your sweet tooth can lead to cavities, obesity, and diabetes. These healthier desserts should do the trick without eating up your teeth.
Instead of ice cream, try frozen fruits covered in yogurt. Wash then cover grapes or berries in Greek yogurt and freeze them. Add chopped pecans, almonds or chia seeds to add some crunch. You can also dip them in dark chocolate if that’s what you’re craving for.
Fruits are rich in nutrients - they build up your immune system, they’re low in fat, sodium, and calories. Their natural sugars will satisfy your cravings for something sweet. Grapes are good for hydration and blueberries are rich in antioxidants. Greek yogurt is packed with probiotics, protein, and calcium. It has fewer carbohydrates and sugar than regular yogurt. All these good things are conveniently squished into these adorable easy-to-make snacks.
Recipes here and here.
CRAVING FOR SODA?
Sugary, acidic drinks are bad for your teeth, increase your chances of getting diabetes, slow down your metabolism, and some even say that Coca-Cola can affect your reproductive health. Sparkling water infused with fresh fruit is a fun and beneficial alternative for these unhealthy beverages.
Making these carbonated drinks really gives you room to explore what fruits and other garnishes go great together. You can even pour them into cute little mason jars - perfect for parties or just for your Instagram feed. Water is our number one weapon against toxins. Paired with fruit, these two can really help detoxify. Refreshing, healthy, and aesthetically pleasing to the eye. Everyone wins.

Despite the hustle and bustle in this now fast-paced world, the one thing that shouldn't be overlooked is what we're putting in our stomachs. A little effort in eating healthier and improving ourselves can surely go a long way. Happy snacking!

In a fast-paced world, everything has to move quickly or chaos may ensue. Take a slow WiFi connection for example, it would surely stress out anyone, whether they be working online or just browsing through the internet. To keep up with the society's fast performance, people opt for fast food. Not only is fast food served swiftly, it is also pretty affordable. Being convenient, economical, and satisfying, it does not come as a shock how fast food corporations are gaining $$$ as fast as consumers are gaining kilograms.
Unfortunately, even if consumers are aware of the harmful effects fast food can have on the body, some people just couldn't stay away from it especially with all the enticing advertisements that offer great promos which produce continued consumption and patronage. Alas, together with smoking and alcohol addiction, allowing fast food to be a constant in one's lifestyle would definitely result to a long list of health threats. (Btw, this is when I get all science-y and stuff please do read on because I really want to prove how harmful fast food is as I munch on a slice of pizza myself.)
We need food to function properly in our daily lives. The food that we eat has a direct impact on how we feel. Fast food is usually accompanied by soda and both are very heavy in carbohydrates, unhealthy fat, and sodium. Our bodies digest carbs and transforms it to sugar, which is then let out into the bloodstream. Our pancreas react by producing insulin, which transports the sugar throughout the body. As the body takes in the sugar, our blood sugar levels drop, which makes our pancreas let out another hormone known as glucagon. This hormone is responsible for letting our livers know that it is time to start using the stored sugar. Now, when all is balanced, everything should be fine, everything is normal. The moment we consume more than what is deemed to be normal, then things start to get a little bad inside of us. Therefore, consuming meals that are high in carbs, can cause a big imbalance in our system, specifically targeting our blood sugar level. When that blood sugar level spikes up often, we may be at risk for type 2 diabetes! An increased blood sugar level also triggers the presence of acne. Yes, folks. Greasy food shouldn't take all the blame for the acne.
High amounts of sugar are accompanied by high levels of calories which is something you should avoid when you're trying to shed off some pounds since those calories add up as extra weight and could be a contributing factor to heart disease. We all have this thing called high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, or the "good cholesterol." High levels of HDL reduce the risk for heart disease. Trans fat is found in fast food. It's so bad it raises the levels of LDL (low-density lipoprotein) cholesterol which lowers the level of HDL cholesterol in our system, which would then put you at risk to, you guessed it, type 2 diabetes and heart disease.
Since fast food is high in preservatives and sodium, excess of salts would result to water retention in our bodies. It causes us to bloat and look puffy. Again, just like the previously mentioned harmful components, sodium will be partly responsible for high blood pressure, or an enlarged heart muscle. Also, excess sodium will put you at risk for strokes, kidney stones and kidney disease. Some studies show that sodium and calcium have a little competition inside of us, so when we take in a lot of sodium, we excrete a huge lot of calcium when we pee. This will greatly affect our bones, causing osteoporosis and bone fractures. This information is important, especially for growing children who are exposed to meals with high levels of sodium. So, please lessen the sodium and keep drinking milk.
Keep in mind that too much of anything is never a good thing. Moderation is key. Remember: fast food is dangerous and allowing it to be a constant part of your life is very dangerous. Please try to resist the temptation of those glorious, juicy double cheeseburgers and french fries. Sure, it's nice to have one of those every once in a while, but make sure not to make it a part of your lifetyle. Are you sure you want those extra large fries? A moment on the lips, forever on the hips. (and bloodstream and arteries, whatever, etc.)
