1. Confidence Level: I Woke Up Like This
As with anything else, confidence, and not arrogance, is important. Liking and feeling good in what you're wearing shouldn't be a problem when going out. Who cares if you're underdressed or overdressed for your night out? As long as what you're wearing isn't disrespectful or rude to the host, you should be able to wear what you want with confidence.
2. Comfort, Comfort, Comfort
If you're not in the mood to go out but you really have to, find something you're comfortable in and base your outfit around it or add it as a final touch to what you already have planned out. Whether it's wearing all black or wearing your overused pair of sneakers, a "safety blanket" will always make you feel better.
3. You Only Live Once
I think Sara Donaldson put it best when she said "life is too short to wear ugly clothes." Sure, it's fun to sit around in sleepwear all day but it's never a bad thing to dress up once in a while. And honestly, how often do you get to go out to a fancy event? Dress up in something special, go out, and have fun. Trust me, it won't be as bad as you think.
4. Don't Force It
But at the same time, don't do something you don't want to do just because someone said it's for a "special" event. If you don't want to wear heels or make up because it's not your thing or you just don't feel like it, then don't. Like I said earlier, confidence and comfort are essential but you can't have those two things when you're not happy with what you have on in the first place.
5. Do It for Yourself
This is probably the most important thing to remember when dressing up (for anything.) Choose and wear your clothes for yourself; not for other girls and definitely not for boys. This also means not conforming to all the fashion fads out there. The whole purpose of dressing up is to make you feel good, not to impress anybody else.
