You may not be aware of it, but you’ve just stepped into the world of cosplay!
For some people, the fun part of cosplaying is hunting down and putting together otherwise detached pieces into a complete costume. Bonding with friends while making costumes together is also another reason why people cosplay. Others enjoy it when they make people — especially children — happy by portraying a character they recognize and taking pictures with them. One thing rings true for all cosplayers though - the feeling of simply being a character they love is absolutely fulfilling.
Okay, so let’s say that you want to level up from simple Halloween costumes and want to give cosplay a try. How do you start? There are many ways to go about it and here are some basics:
First, pick a character you want to cosplay as. Come to think of it, the character chooses you. Most cosplayers feel compelled to cosplay as their favorite characters or ones they can relate to. Speaking from experience, I can say that portraying the character is more fun if you feel a strong connection with them. Character portrayal such as facial expressions and poses play an important role in cosplaying; it actually spells the difference between cosplaying and merely putting on a costume. It’s been a habit of mine to throw a random pose in front of the mirror when I’m alone (and I’m sure some other cosplayers would admit that they do this as well). Though it seems kind of embarrassing at first, researching then practicing your expressions in front of a mirror help you truly embody your character.
Local anime, cosplay or toy conventions that are held throughout the year are a great place to debut the costume you worked so hard for. Conventions are rife with cosplayers who want to show off their costume and make friends with people with the same interests. The cosplay community is a very welcoming one so you’re sure to fit in!
The most important thing to remember is that cosplay is not about who has the best costume, but about having fun. To cosplay is truly a magical feeling that can only be felt through the experience itself and the points mentioned only give a glimpse of this interesting and unique hobby.
So what are you waiting for? See you at the next con!!
