How To Scare Guys Away Yet Still Look So Damn Good

10/18/2013

A couple of days back, my school’s English department had all the 12th graders write an Argumentative Essay on “Love and Relationships”. It may seem all fluttery and cute from a distant perspective, but in actuality, most us were initially daunted over the topic. For one, most of us kind of don’t have boys nor experiences on love and relationships; and two, some of us might have held this mantra: books before boys. I mean sure we weren't limited to writing articles solely about romantic love, but romantic love sells and covers probably a third of all internet articles - a convenience for the seven source minimum that was asked of us. To cut my narcissistic tale on my English paper short, I opted to write a topic close to my interest. It was about the freedom women should have when dressing up - freedom from any guy’s dictation on what she chooses to wear. Hence, here’s a guide to man-repelling for the purpose of well, I don’t really know. Probably you just hate guys so much or that you’re just so done with this male - centric planet we’re living in and you just want shout "I AM A WOMAN AND I WANT TO WEAR WHATEVER THE HELL I WANT!"

~The Repellants~

Generally, men loath these things. They could practically act as your pepper spray - albeit, a really fashionable one.

1. Unconventional Heels (and by unconventional, we mean BIZARRE)

Since time and memorial, designers have always considered shoe-making as an art form. We've seen the heel-less shoes, gun-like shoes, flaming shoes, armadillo shoes, shoes with tarantulas on them, etc.  Women would die to have a pair, guys will never understand this craze.

2. Unconventional Tops

With unconventional heels, come unconventional tops. This includes peplum, sheer, ruffles, pajama wear, and more. If your man-repelling desires are not that strong, you can opt to wear a daring top and pair them with any simple bottoms and shoes. At most, do not wear accessories.

3. Oversized Glasses

Yes we don’t care if our whole face is covered with an extravagantly textured pair. If we feel good in it, then so be it!

4. Technicolor Hair and Eccentric Make-up

*Cue an indie electropo synth-based dance track* Because nothing beats having uber-cool and uber-fabulous hair than having a track you can dance to. Meadham Kirchoff is an ideal point of reference when it comes to this matter. Women who can wear really daring colors are truly icons of style. We salute you!

5. Odd Garments

Need I say more? A woman will just know what an odd piece of clothing would look like, and may I add: these are the coolest repellants ever!

PRACTICAL APPLICATION

REMEMBER!

The cardinal rule of Man-Repelling is: the more you wear daring, unconventional, and uncoordinated garments, the better.

Halloween Costumes 2.0

10/11/2013

Ah, Halloween…the time when crazy costumes and overly creative outfits rule the streets during the night. Though why dress up as a typical ghost with a sheet over your head or spend money on a Disney costume that you'll only wear once when you can use the clothes you already have in your closet? Here are five Halloween-approved not-so-scary outfit ideas you can wear this season:

Picture

1. Pretty in Pink

(princess costume)

Instead of the usual big ball gown dress and sky-high heels, transforming into a lovely princess is now made easy brought to you by your closet! A simple skater skirt and a nice sparkly top or a cocktail dress paired with some cute flats/sandals will make you look like one of the princesses in Disneyland!

2. Do You Like Me Meow?
(cat costume)

We're all familiar with the sexy cat costume, but let's face it: spandex is hard to pull off [and hard to wear!]. As an alternative, black skinny jeans and a leopard/cheetah-print top will still make you look as fierce as Anne Hathaway in The Dark Knight Rises. If you don't have any feline-print clothes, wearing all black topped with DIY cat ears (black felt paper taped to a headband) will still look very cute! Finish the whole outfit with black boots or flats, and you're good to go!

3. The Kids Are Alright

(little kid costume)

Going as a little kid for Halloween ain't a bad thing too. Go out and ask for all the candies you can eat in a vintage graphic tee and a pair of overalls. If you don't have overalls, denim shorts can work too! Just don't forget to use some kiddie sneakers and an adorable headband and you're good to go!

4. Too School for Cool
(schoolgirl costume)

Usually, girls tend to over-do this costume with an exaggerated version of the Japanese schoolgirl uniform; but hey, why not spice it up a little? Instead of going with the usual super short pleated blue skirt with the white button-down shirt, go for cute plaid skirts and an adorable sweater. Accessorize it with a pair of brogues, a satchel, and some cute ribbons and you just sweetened up the infamous school girl outfit.

5. Country Strong

(cowgirl costume)

Last but definitely not the least, the cowgirl. I don't know about you, but where we're from, it's hot all year round. Jeans with a long-sleeved plaid top and vest paired with some cowboy boots is not an ideal costume when you know it's gonna be 86 degrees out there. So we're gonna give you an alternative! High waited shorts with a plaid top and cowboy boots may just be the answer to all the weather worries. A cute cowgirl bag can be your new candy bag too!

That's just few of the things you can do to sweeten up the typical Halloween costumes and now you won't get lost! We're just getting started so watch out for more!

The Best Pairs You'll Ever Find

Dr. Martens and TUK are British-based brands that are often linked to punks, the grunge scene, Russians, and even soldiers. Although combat boots and creepers first started out as military footwear during the second world war, these shoes also became one of the biggest (and most practical) fashion staples to ever be invented. With their rubber and crepe soles, these shoes can definitely last a lifetime. Not to mention, they give an edge to any outfit you wear. Although, most people find these shoes intimidating and weird; that just goes to show that they haven't fully appreciated the eccentricity and usefulness of them just yet.

Here are three reasons why you have to have a pair of either combat boots or creepers [or both]:

     1. Docs and creepers are weather-practical. Whatever weather condition it may be, it's always appropriate to wear these. Most of these shoes are waterproof and I can assure you that they can help you get through the rain or snow!

      2. They are very comfortable. At first, it might feel weird because they can be heavier than your normal flats or sneakers, but after you wear them like five times (or less), it will start to feel like any other pair of shoes on your feet.

     3. They're very versatile. You can wear them with your everyday clothes or if you opt for going a bit more dressy, you can use them too. Since these shoes actually come in different prints and styles (yes, it's not just the normal combat boots and oxford shoes style), you can use any pair to style up any outfit for numerous occasions.
Need I explain more? Combat boots and creepers get all three checks for being the perfect pair of shoes! Comfort, weather, and style all wrapped up in one pair. Did I mention that they give you an additional height boost because the soles range from 1-3 inches?

They're definitely something every one should have in their closets.
