The Uglies by Scott Westerfeld is set in this post-apocalyptic world where 16-year-olds don't just get a licence, a new car, or the ultimate birthday bash. These teens get the ultimate make-over - literally. A bus will fetch them and they will be brought to this "hospital" where they will get everything fixed based on the standards set by their ancestors; they will become thinner, prettier, and just better than how they looked before. After they heal from the operations, they will be brought to this new city where everything is brighter, the music louder, and the people wilder. They're literally gonna party until they drop. Sounds like the dream life to most teens but no! Of course it doesn't end there.
Tally, the protagonist, will turn 16 in a couple of days and she can't wait to start living the new life with her childhood ((guy)) friend who is now in Prettyville (no that's not what it's called). But a few nights before her birthday her other friend, Shay who is a girl, shows her the life outside their little Ugly town - and there is definitely a life outside that town. Now this new revelation rattles Tally's life and she is now faced with a dilemma - to leave the city before her big operation or not?
This book never does explain what it means by "pretty" and "ugly". It's all up to the reader and their imagination. This thrilling book will definitely make you realize some things you may have just ignored before and maybe even make you appreciate what you have now. Did I mention that it's also a series? There are 4 books and yes, you have to read all of them. So go to the nearest bookstore now or download it and get your own copy!! Leave comments if you have!!
