This book is the first Filipino novel I have read other than those in my high school Filipino classes. When I saw this on good reads, with high ratings and excellent reviews, I figured I should go give this book a shot.
Saying that I enjoyed the book is an understatement; I was hooked right from the start of the novel. The story was told backwards, starting from the climax of the story, it slowly unraveled the different conflicts to why it led up to that. Apart from this, I’ve found out so much about the Filipino culture; a glimpse of the socialite life of the avaricious, rich Filipinos, the mail-order bride system back in the 90s, and a whole lot more. Lastly, the novel was wonderfully written, providing every essential detail, for the story to come to life.
All in all, I would give this book 4 out of 5 mangoes (see what I did there). So if you’re into a lot of “WTF just happened” plot twits, and want to start reading more Filipino books, grab some dried mangoes, and give this novel a go!
