You could be wondering, why ten breaths? Why would they be tiny, why not deep breaths? That’s what Kacey wonders too throughout the story of Ten Tiny Breaths.
The book starts out with sisters, Kacey and Livie moving to Miami after running away from their aunt and uncle’s whom they were forced to live with after their parents' death. Their parents, along with Kacey, her best friend, and her boyfriend were caught in a car accident leaving Kacey the only survivor of the crash. Now she’s just getting through life as the “After Kacey” trying to keep themselves afloat in Miami.
What I love most about this book are the characters. Kacey was a troubled twenty year old suffering from PTSD who still has her feelings bottled up years after the accident. Livie, fifteen years old but has already gone through so much for someone her age, being with her sister as she copes with the traumatic event that changed their lives. Trent, the oh so handsome guy who sweeps Kacey off her feet and tries everything in his power to make her happy and make her forget all her demons, but of course not without hiding a few himself. Storm and Mia, Kacey and Livie’s neighbors who have somehow found their way through ice queen Kacey’ heart. And everyone else, Cain, Nate, Ben, and Dan, I could go on.
This book with take you on a rollercoaster ride of emotions. Reading this made me laugh with the characters’ banters with each other and the witty humor that K.A. Tucker wrote along with the rest of the book. It made me cry, feeling the heartbreak, the heartaches, the sadness, the loss that came along with Kacey’s story. It made me smile and feel so much kilig reading during all the Kacey and Trent moments. It also made me believe a little in second chances and how they surprise you when you least expect it.
“I don't hate you. I could never hate you. Give me your heart, Kacey. I'll take everything that comes with it.”
“I want to make you smile. For real. Always. We're going to go for dinners, and see movies, and walk on the beach. We'll go hang-gliding, or bungee jumping, or whatever you want to do. Whatever makes you smile and laugh more. Let me make you smile.”
“Isn't it exhausting?"
"Keeping people out.”
“I'll make you whole again, Kacey. I promise you, I will.”
“Our past isn't who we are. I'm me and you're you and that's who we need to be.”
“Forever’s a long time.” Trent’s arms squeeze around me. “Forever’s not long enough when it’s with you.”
“I should stalk over there and pee around his table to stake my claim. Wait...what? Jeez, Kacey.”
“What if he's a psychopath who tries to stuff kittens in ATMs?”
“I can feel his very existence as if it's wrapping its hand around my soul, cradling it, trying to protect it from harm and I'm terrified. Terrified because I don't ever want the feeling to end”
Ten Tiny Breaths is part of a series written by K.A. Tucker! Read Livie’s story once she’s gotten to college in One Tiny Lie. Strip club owner, Cain’s story in Four Seconds to Lose (don’t let the strip club owner title fool you, he’s awesome so go read his story!). And bouncer/lawyer-in-the-making Ben’s story in Five Ways to Fall.
