My Komiks Reading List 2015

Shame on me for not expanding my love for local literature over the past few months. Granted, it’s quite hard to read books while juggling academics, and extracurriculars, but that’s why we have Filipino komiks. They’re perfect for those who who are on the go because they’re short and simple but can either be incredibly witty and funny or just quiet and meaningful.

Different komikeros have different inspirations for their komiks, resulting in a wonderful diversity in the scene. There’s a komik for everyone! The list below is guaranteed to give you at least one work that you would be interested in.  As for me, I’d take all five.

1.       Dirty Laundry and Other Stories by Danielle Riña

Dirty Laundry is the window to Danielle Riña’s witty and humorous mind. The art also fits the name because it literally looks “dirty” in the best way possible. It’s somewhat messy and unorganized like noise but it’s also beautiful and strangely humorous in its own quiet way. Did I mention you can read the first two issues on Flipreads?

2.       Crime Fighting Call Center Agents by Noel Pascual and AJ Bernardo

Another komik that you can find free on Flipreads! Isn’t the world great? Not in the world of the Crime Fighting Call Center Agents. It’s not really crime that they’re fighting (just yet) but it’s about how four call center agents are running for their lives from the peculiar and strange. It’s a light-hearted take on The Walking Dead and the humor is absolutely relatable to most demographics. Check out for more crazy crime-fighting adventures at their Facebook page!

3.       Ugh by Hulyen

I picked up Ugh #1 from Free Comic Book Day 2015 upon recommendation by a friend. It’s the totally relatable tales of the awkward, cynical, and always stressed Hulyen and “iba pang ‘nakaka-ashame’ stuffs”. It’s like she was high when she was making this, high on life.  Stay tuned for more awkwardness on her Tumblr!

"Septyembre 18, 1891, natapos ni Rizal ang pagsusulat ng El Filibusterismo. Pinatay niya na nang tuluyan si Ibarra, thus ending all our hopes for a possible Elibarra ending. Pwede naman kasing iresurek si Elias."

4.        Dead Balagtas

Dead Balagtas releases comic strips that take a different but refreshing view on our history. Just imagine #RP0612Fic in comic form. Fantastic. Inspirational. And so beautifully satirical. Be updated with more historical satire on her FB page!

5.       Alamat ng Panget by Apol Sta. Maria

This komik is so random and funny. This is what you read when it’s one in the morning and you’re sleep deprived and ready to fall apart. It instantly lifts your spirits without mushy inspirational quotes. Check out Apol Sta. Maria’s Instagram for more quirky komiks and art!

We definitely should appreciate the local komik scene more and more, especially considering how accessible komiks are these days. It’s not easier to take a few minutes off your busy schedule and let yourself laugh at the most randomest things. Happy reading!
